The 27-year-old Austria international is among several defensive options under review late in the window.

There is significant history with Florent Ghisolfi. As Lens sporting director he brought Danso from Augsburg in August 2021, and the defender became a cornerstone, making 128 appearances and helping finish second in Ligue 1 and reach the Champions League.

After Ghisolfi joined Roma in May 2024 he tried to sign Danso again on an initial loan with an obligation to buy, a package worth up to €26million, around £22million. The move collapsed during Italy’s medical process amid heart concerns, Lens publicly questioned the outcome and Danso said he was surprised and disappointed.

Specialist tests at Cleveland Clinic London later found no heart muscle scarring or electrical abnormalities likely to cause dangerous arrhythmias, and he was cleared to return in October 2024.

Tottenham then moved the following February, taking Danso on loan with an obligation to buy for €25million, around £20.9million, and agreeing a long-term deal.

Sunderland’s approach is the third time Ghisolfi has pursued Danso. With Tottenham declining, there is no agreement for a move to Wearside and the Black Cats continue to assess alternatives.
