Sunderland have made a loan enquiry for Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Kevin Danso, only for Spurs to reject the approach outright. The report comes from journalist Sami Mobkel, who states that the Austrian international’s first-team chances at Spurs are set to be limited under Roberto De Zerbi this season. Danso, 27, has 36 caps for Austria and was a consistent presence for Tottenham in 2025/26, with 35 appearances across all competitions, 24 of those in the Premier League, eight in the Champions League, and a hand in seven clean sheets.

But the arrivals of Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi have pushed him firmly down the pecking order. He’s asked to leave. Spurs want a permanent economic package, not just a season-long dry loan. Sunderland’s enquiry, according to Mobkel, was for exactly that, a straight loan, and it’s been rejected.

This isn’t a crisis for Régis Le Bris, but it is a sharp reminder of where the Black Cats sit in the food chain. Le Bris has made a settled start on Wearside, and hunting for a physically imposing, ball-playing centre-back is clearly his final piece of the jigsaw. Going after a defender who won the Europa League in 2024-25 and featured in the 2026 World Cup signals serious ambition. Nobody can take that away from the club.

Falling short on a loan bid, though? That’s just the market at work.

Sunderland‘s next move has to be a restructured offer. Danso is reportedly open to the switch. He wants regular football, and De Zerbi has publicly confirmed as much. The problem isn’t the player. It’s purely financial. Tottenham don’t want to loan him out without getting something back, and a mandatory purchase clause or an obligation-to-buy could be the bridge that satisfies both clubs.

That’s the deal Sunderland need to push. A loan-to-buy structure protects their cash flow now while giving Tottenham the economic resolution they’re after. It’s not complicated in theory. Getting it over the line before the deadline is the hard part.

If Spurs won’t budge, Le Bris needs to pivot fast. Danso’s 87% passing accuracy fits the possession-based system Le Bris runs, and finding a comparable alternative in the remaining hours of the window is a tall order. Sunderland need a mobile, technically sound defender, not a stopgap.
