Sunderland will host Liverpool in midweek after losing at Arsenal, and fresh projections indicate where their season could end.
They drew 2-2 with the Gunners in November at the Stadium of Light after a last-gasp Brian Brobbey equaliser. In the return at the Emirates, Martin Zubimendi struck and Viktor Gyokeres added two as the leaders claimed all three points. According to Opta, Sunderland are projected to finish 11th on 50.76 points.
The same projection has Arsenal first on 82.76 points, Manchester City second with 71.34, Aston Villa third on 70.11, Chelsea fourth with 63.92 and Liverpool fifth on 63.11.
Despite the setback, there were positives for Regis Le Bris and continued optimism that their impressive return to the top flight can be maintained with a strong run-in.
Le Bris felt his side showed character in a match they anticipated, noting Arsenal’s threat from set-pieces and after the counter-press, and that two turnovers led to two of the goals conceded.
He said Sunderland had early second-half chances to get back into it but did not take them, so the contest slipped away. He added the display felt different to the West Ham and Brentford defeats, called for resilience, and welcomed another home test in three days.
