“Switch Off…” – Blades Stopper Highlights Sheffield United’s Mentality After Late Loss | OneFootball

Sheffield United suffered a cruel late 1-0 defeat at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday afternoon as the Blades were punished for a momentary lapse in concentration.

The game never felt like a straightforward 0-0, with both sides showing enough quality and intent to suggest that a decisive moment could arrive at either end.

Unfortunately for Chris Wilder’s side, it was Wolves who produced that moment when it mattered most.

The visitors called upon their Premier League quality late on to snatch all three points at Bramall Lane, with a wonderfully worked move eventually breaking United’s resistance.

Kieran Trippier was allowed to lurk in space down the right before delivering a dangerous first-time cut-back into the Blades penalty area. The ball eventually fell to former Sheffield United midfielder Tommy Doyle, whose effort was untidy but inadvertently devastating as his skewed shot found its way into the path of Raul Jimenez.

The Mexican striker made no mistake from just a few yards out, burying the ball beyond Michael Cooper and sparking celebrations among the travelling supporters.

Cooper admitted afterwards that the Blades had performed well for much of the afternoon, but felt they were ultimately undone by a brief lapse at the worst possible moment.

“Yeah really good up until that last minute when you know ultimately we’ve switched off and let them in so yeah just really disappointed with that as a squad,” Cooper told SUTV.

The goalkeeper was also keen to acknowledge the supporters who remained inside Bramall Lane to applaud the players at the final whistle. “We appreciate that massively [fans applauding at the end], the ones that can stay and clap off, we know not everyone can do that,” he said.

“But it’s just a bit of a sucker punch you know, credit because obviously the effort was there for 90 minutes but for just that split second against a team like that, you just know as a unit we just can’t switch off the way we did so bitterly disappointing.”

Doyle’s wayward effort provided an element of fortune to the winning goal, but Cooper believes United must take responsibility for allowing the ball into the danger area in the first place. “That’s just the way it goes sometimes you know, that’s just defending your box, emergency defending sometimes it can go that way but you know we’ve got to try and do our best and not let the ball come in in the first place,” he added.

Despite the disappointment, Cooper insisted there were positives for the Blades to take from the performance. However, the United goalkeeper acknowledged that their mentality at the crucial moment ultimately let them down, with the Blades having been seconds away from taking a point and keeping another clean sheet.

“It [mentality] was there today just not for that last little bit when you know we’ve got to see the game out and take a clean sheet, maybe take a draw and then move into Wednesday [in the cup],” Cooper said. “There’s plenty of positives but we just got to look at that last little bit.”

There will be a momentary pause in the league action this week as Sheffield United travel to face Fleetwood Town in the EFL Cup on Wednesday evening before visiting Stoke City in the Championship on Saturday afternoon.
