Switzerland head into Wednesday evening’s Group B finale at BC Place knowing a victory will see them top the group for the first time since 2006.

Murat Yakin’s side have been methodical and disciplined throughout the group stage — drawing with Qatar before routing Bosnia-Herzegovina 4-1.

Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler form the engine room once more, tasked with controlling the midfield tempo and disrupting Canada’s high-pressing approach.

The Swiss know a draw would likely see both sides through, but Yakin will want his players focused on taking all three points.

Switzerland team news

Yakin faces one key defensive decision. Nico Elvedi is carrying a yellow card and risks suspension should he pick up another booking.

Luca Jaquez is expected to partner Manuel Akanji at centre-back as a precaution. Silvan Widmer and Ricardo Rodriguez continue at full-back, with Gregor Kobel in goal.

In midfield, Xhaka and Freuler anchor the base with Michel Aebischer ahead of them. The most interesting selection question is in attack, where Johan Manzambi is pushing hard for a starting role after his two-goal cameo against Bosnia.

Ruben Vargas is expected to keep his place on the left flank. Dan Ndoye provides width on the right, with Breel Embolo leading the line.

Switzerland predicted lineup

Switzerland possible starting XI: Kobel; Widmer, Jaquez, Akanji, Rodriguez; Aebischer, Xhaka, Freuler; Ndoye, Embolo, Vargas
