According to Le Progres, UEFA has appointed Szymon Marciniak to take charge of the Champions League third qualifying round second leg between Olympique Lyonnais and Sparta Prague at Groupama Stadium on Tuesday at 21:00.
Lyon lost 2-1 in the Czech Republic last week. Paulo Fonseca’s side must win by at least two goals to avoid extra time, otherwise they risk a premature exit.
At 45, Marciniak is an established figure, having refereed the 2022 World Cup final. UEFA has turned to one of the elite for a high-stakes tie.
It will be the fifth time the Pole has overseen an OL match. His most recent assignment brought the painful 5-1 defeat at Camp Nou in 2019.
He was also in the middle for the 3-1 win over Ajax in the Europa League in 2017, which was not enough to qualify. The other two were narrow defeats against Juventus in 2016, 0-1, and Viktoria Plzen in 2014, 2-1.
