Santos fear a renewed transfer ban over about 2 million euros owed to Monaco for Jean Lucas. President Marcelo Teixeira said talks with the French club aim to reach an agreement and avoid sanction.

Globo.com reports that the Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected Santos's appeal, leaving no further route to challenge the case. Teixeira said the ban could already have been imposed but a second payment in July 2024 showed good faith.

He added another instalment fell due in January 2025, so two payments landed across successive windows and strained finances. He suggested ongoing dialogue may explain why a ban has not yet been applied, and said resources might be diverted to settle these commitments.

While seeking to clear the debt, Santos are also assessing reinforcements for the rest of the season. The window opens on 20 July and, so far, there has been no movement on arrivals.

Teixeira criticised the mid-year window date, arguing it fuels speculation while players remain under contract and registrations start only in July. He said the market looks tight, perhaps because of the Cup, and is inflated, though priorities are set and the football department is working.

After 21 days off, the squad returned to work this week. Their next fixture is against Botafogo in the 19th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro, brought forward by the CBF to 16 July at 19:30 at Estádio Nilton Santos.
