Millwall are set to pay €6m (£5.1m) to sign Belgian attacker Mathis Servais from KV Mechelen this summer

Millwall finished just one point behind Ipswich Town last season, narrowly missing out on a place in the automatic promotion places despite victory on the final day of the season at home to Oxford United.

The Lions' promotion hopes took a hit as they headed into a two-legged affair with Hull City in the play-off semi-finals, and a 2-0 aggregate defeat to the Tigers confirmed their place in the Championship once again next season in heartbreaking circumstances.

Scottish head coach Alex Neil is looking to put that disappointment as far behind him as possible now, and with the summer transfer window officially open, Millwall are on the cusp of completing some record-breaking business for Belgian forward Mathis Servais.

Millwall have been quick to act in the transfer window this summer following its commencement, having completed two deals already, and are edging closer to a third.

Jenson Metcalfe (21) joined from League One side Bradford City for an undisclosed fee to begin their summer haul, signing a long-term contract at The Den, whilst Guadeloupean striker Tairyk Arconte has joined from French side Rodez for around €3 million (£2.6 million) to add strength and depth to the likes of Mihailo Ivanovic, Josh Coburn, and Macaulay Langstaff up top.

The Lions are looking to claw their way into the Premier League with some savvy business, but are looking to splash out on a deal for 21-year-old attacker Mathis Servais, as according to Belgian journalist Sacha Talovieri, Millwall are prepared to pay around €6 million (£5.1 million) for the KV Mechelen forward.

Servais, to date, has only ever played his football in his native Belgium, coming through the ranks at Club Brugge before spending time with SK Beveren and, most recently, Mechelen, with whom he scored twice and assisted three in 34 games last season.

Servais has been capped numerous times at youth level for Belgium, and is widely regarded as one of the brightest young talents in the Jupiler Pro League.

Talovieri also reports that Millwall have prepared a five-year deal for Servais to sign, but await his decision on whether to make the move to the Championship or not.

He would follow in the footsteps of the likes of Zian Flemming, Casper de Norre, Mihailo Ivanovic, Derek Mazou-Sacko, and Camiel Neghli to make the move from abroad and shine in the second tier for the Lions, as Millwall will be hoping that Servais will be the pick of the bunch if he were to sign.

Neghli is considered to be their current record signing, and though his fee from Sparta Rotterdam was undisclosed, it was believed to be worth more than the £2.8 million they paid Vojvodina for Ivanovic.

Millwall's excellent recruitment model over the years gives supporters every reason to believe that they have found another gem in Servais, and with a five-year deal prepared, this could be a transfer looked back upon as another turning point for the club in years to come if they can get it over the line.

It goes without saying that, having missed out on promotion in an agonising manner last time around, Neil will be steadfast in his ambition to go one better next year.

The Lions have never played in the Premier League, and last played top flight football back in 1990, some 36 years ago, and ending that barren will be their utmost priority.

Millwall's smart recruitment in recent times is the reason as to why they stood a chance of promotion last season in the first place, and to break their transfer record following this disappointment exemplifies their ambition to right their wrongs from last time around.

Whether Servais will be a hit remains to be seen, though going off the Lions' previous recruitment, it wouldn't be a surprise if he were to light up the Championship next campaign.
