Premier League clubs have finances the envy of world football, but there will still plenty of bargains amid a summer spending spree.
Following the closure of the transfer window, we’ve picked out five of the best-value deals made by Premier League clubs. Loan deals have been excluded from the list.
Mikel Arteta has a fascination with defenders and bolstered his squad over the summer with the additions of Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapie. The former arrived from Valencia for a cut-price £13m, due to entering the final season of his deal at The Mestalla.
The 21-year-old rankled fourth in La Liga for percentage of dribblers tackled (77.5%) and is expected to become a full Spain international in the near future.
Having established a reputation as arguably the Premier League’s best number two, Caoimhin Kelleher quit Liverpool in search of a first-choice role this summer. Brentford bought the Irishman for an initial £12.5m, a deal that could rise to £18m with add-ons.
Given Kelleher’s impressive performances at Anfield and, at 26, his room for growth, it could be a snip for a Brentford side in transition.
Brighton have one of the best talent IDs in the Premier League and snapped up PSV Eindhoven defender Olivier Boscagli on a free transfer this summer.
At 27, Boscagli deviates from the club’s usual youth-centric recruitment focus but arrives with a fine reputation. Last season, the Frenchman led all Eredivisie centre-backs for progressive passes, completed passes, chances created and passes into the final third per 90.
Bournemouth saw their backline decimated over the summer with Illia Zabarnyi, Dean Huijsen and Milos Kerkez leaving for European giants.
Adrien Truffert was signed to replace the latter and has made an excellent start on the south coast. Still just 23, Truffert has shown great ability at both ends of the pitch, winning duels and bombing forward to join the attack.
It’s not often you can pick up an elite goalkeeper for a little more than £25m, but Manchester City have done just that. Donnarumma’s failure to agree a new contract at PSG paved the path for a Premier League transfer, just months after his crucial role in the French side’s maiden Champions League success.
The Italian does not feel like a Pep Guardiola signing, but neither did Erling Haaland. That one has worked out quite well.
