Rangers fans’ public enemy number one is clearly Kevin Thelwell, along with his son Robbie, and to an extent, Youssef Chermiti.
For now, German head coach Danny Rohl is receiving a free pass, albeit Ibrox Noise is well aware he’s probably not good enough either.
But just how does Thelwell and Rohl’s relationship actually work?
Ibrox Noise exposes the inner sanctum of exactly how Rohl’s influence extends and where Thelwell’s sits.
Steven Gerrard, Kevin Muscat and Bo Svensson to name just three turned Rangers down once Kevin Thelwell told them what was what.
Once he explained his role, all three of those said no thank you. Rohl had already exited. But once the options dried up, Rangers persuaded him back with a good wage and strong severance package.
Persuaded him to be a yes man, because Thelwell runs Rangers.
And how?
Kevin Thelwell runs every single aspect of Rangers’ football side. Recruitment, selections, football partnerships. He is the absolute boss of the club on the football side.
Danny Rohl is very limited in what he does. He trains the players with his backroom staff, and we understand he picks the formations, but he does that depending on who he’s been instructed to select.
He picks the formation based on Thelwell’s selections.
Rohl is a head coach with good reason. It is literal. He is the leading coach at Rangers. And what do coaches do? They develop and train players.
Rangers’ owners, the 49ers and Andrew Cavenagh, really aren’t that interested in the football side. They are businessmen, and the only reason they fired Russell Martin was the fan protest in Falkirk was bad for business. You don’t attract sponsors and investors so easily with police cordons on your manager.
Rohl was carefully selected because he’s affable, easy to control, and Thelwell gets to do what he likes.
Cavenagh is only interested in his asset generating decent revenue and not having a bad look. He was delighted with the tifo at Ibrox because of how good that looked worldwide. The result was immaterial to him.
Thelwell’s ego is colossal, and so big he’s got his family involved and working for the club too.
Rohl is just a pawn, a well-paid one, who does what he’s told.
This is why Gerrard and other alpha managers walked away. Because they had no time for Thelwell.
Rohl’s hands are tied, and he just gets on with it. He’s tonnes of credit in the bank because he’s more likable and fans will let him away most things for as long as Thelwell is there.
The Sporting Director rightly gets all the flack, but he doesn’t appear to care.
This hierarchy and model will remain in place for the foreseeable future and Rangers are absolutely stuck under this ownership.
Reassuring times.
