Luton Town’s goalkeeping situation is a very difficult one to fully assess.
At present, Nottingham Forest loanee Ethan Horvath is number one at Kenilworth Road and at the start of the campaign, Harry Isted and Matt Macey were providing the American international with competition.
However, the fringed duo were sent out on loan to Barnsley and Portsmouth respectively, with Jack Walton arriving in Bedfordshire on a permanent deal in January.
The added layer of complication in this situation is that James Shea has spent nearly 10 months out after suffering a serious knee injury against Cardiff City last season, with the experienced shot-stopper closing in on a return.
In fact, Shea was named on the bench during Tuesday night’s 2-2 draw with Millwall, whilst he has been given game time with the club’s U21s in recent weeks.
Given that there is a real element of uncertainty surrounding Luton’s goalkeeping situation and how everything will play out in the summer, Portsmouth may look to take advantage and strike a permanent agreement with Macey.

True False
Recently speaking to The News about Macey’s situation with the summer in mind, Portsmouth boss John Mousinho revealed that both he and the club would be open to exploring a potential permanent deal for the towering goalkeeper.
Appearing seven times for Pompey thus far in League One, Macey has managed four clean sheets in those games, conceding just four times in the process and has gone down well with the Portsmouth faithful.
Luton paid a small six-figure fee to secure the signing of the shot-stopper from Hibernian last season, meaning it would be no surprise if the fee that Luton ask for is within budget for Pompey.
Macey is still just 28 years of age, meaning he represents an immediate solution for the League One outfit and a potentially longer-term fix too.
It would be no surprise if Luton are exploring further goalkeeping options ahead of the opening of the summer window, something that will place Macey further down the pecking order at Kenilworth Road.
You would think that Isted would be slightly ahead of Macey in the pecking order when the pair return from their respective loan moves, given that the former was typically named on the bench more than the latter during the first part of this season.
There is a very real possibility that Macey could end up at Portsmouth this summer and Luton should look to sanction his departure if so.
