The transfer dilemma Florent Ghisolfi has to solve as Sunderland weigh up Anthony Patterson options

Sunderland face a delicate decision over Anthony Patterson as they reshape the squad for 2026/27. According to Sunderland Echo, the goalkeeper is back on Wearside for pre-season, yet a route back to the number one shirt looks remote with Robin Roefs established and Melker Ellborg signed in January.

A summer exit is widely accepted as likely, but there is no resolution while the club seek terms that reflect his value. At 26 with nearly 200 senior games and five seasons of consistent numbers, Patterson represents a significant asset for any ambitious side.

As with the old PSR, academy sales are pure profit. Under SCR, that profit is averaged across three years. If Sunderland realise around £eight-10 million, they could create roughly £three million of headroom for the next few years, with Ellborg in place on low amortisation.

Most suitors are Championship clubs due to his limited top-tier experience. Unless they bank significant fees, many may be reluctant to spend that sum on a goalkeeper while other areas take priority.

A January loan to Millwall protected value and sharpness, but with two years left on his deal another loan now looks less appealing and could weaken Sunderland next summer. A loan with an obligation to buy on promotion is one route, though it carries risk. More likely is a smaller initial fee with substantial add-ons, while Patterson is thought to prefer a permanent move and both sides may need patience and pragmatism.
