Thomas Frank has been sacked by Tottenham after seven and a half months in charge, with Spurs 16th in the Premier League and only two wins in their past 17 league games.
According to L'Équipe, the Dane was dismissed on Wednesday, a day after the 1-2 defeat at Newcastle, their 11th league loss of the season. He had said he did not feel under threat, had spoken to shareholders and still felt the right man to turn things around.
Supporters turned after the 0-0 draw at Brentford on the first day of the year, criticising uninspiring football and a squad seemingly out of sync with his constantly revised game plan. Not even direct qualification for the Champions League last 16 could save him.
Frank chose Spurs after also holding talks with Manchester United and Chelsea. His reign started brightly, then unravelled, and the latest home defeat prompted fans to chant the name of Mauricio Pochettino, who led Tottenham from 2014 to 2019.
Lately he appeared to be feeling his way tactically, flipping from a back four to a back three and back again within games. On the left of the attack he never settled on a solution, with Xavi Simons used there recently and uncomfortable. With 12 matches to play, the gap to West Ham, the highest-placed side in the relegation zone, is five points.
When parting with their manager, the club had not yet identified a successor. John Heitinga had been imposed as his assistant a month ago, which was not a promising sign.
