Thomas Meunier has dismissed suggestions he had agreed to join Marseille before signing for Sunderland. L’Équipe claimed he had an agreement with the Ligue 1 side and later opted for Wearside due to delays in resolving the club’s finances.

The 34-year-old responded on social media, writing: “Never had an agreement, nothing at all.”

His post appeared intended to underline that Sunderland were not a contingency after a proposed Marseille switch fell through.

The Belgium international joined on a free last month after leaving Lille. He previously played for Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund and Trabzonspor.

The move gives him the chance to play in the Premier League for the first time, having been linked with English clubs before.

He is expected to add experience and versatility as Régis Le Bris prepares Sunderland for domestic and European commitments. Meunier can feature at right-back, wing-back or on the right of a back three.
