“Through the roughest part”: Matthäus sees a decisive sign in Musiala’s performance | OneFootball

Jamal Musiala is back—and is gradually regaining his former form at FC Bayern. In the 7-0 rout of Union Berlin, the 23-year-old played the full 90 minutes for the first time in a long while and rewarded himself with a goal and an assist.

For Lothar Matthäus, however, it wasn’t just the offensive star’s on-field performance that was a positive sign. After the game, the TV analyst paid close attention to how Musiala carried himself in front of the cameras.

Speaking with Sky, the former Bayern captain explained that he was particularly struck by the German international’s charisma.

“Through the toughest part”

“What I liked even more than Jamal Musiala’s goal on Friday was the interview afterward. A smile from start to finish—an interview with a smiling Jamal. And that shows me: Hey, I’ve actually gotten through the roughest part. Everything else will fall into place. He showed that again—not just with his goals, but also by dribbling through the opposing defense like he’s weaving through slalom poles, even when they’re packed tightly against FC Bayern. That’s exactly what FC Bayern needs.”

Musiala had put Bayern ahead 1–0 early in the match against Union and later set up a goal for Michael Olise. What was particularly striking was that the attacking player was once again looking to make his signature dribbles more often and was able to break through even against multiple defenders.

For Matthäus, these very moves are a key indication that Musiala is on his way back to his former form.

Musiala continues to find his rhythm with the DFB

The timing of the three-week international break is quite convenient for Musiala. While some German national team players will only participate in part of the DFB’s schedule, the Bayern star is expected to remain with Jürgen Klopp’s squad for the entire period.

Musiala himself made it clear after the Union game just how important the 90 minutes he played were to him.

“I feel really good. Every game is a step forward. I know there are still steps I can take, but playing 90 minutes again is a great feeling. I haven’t done that in a long time, and I’m looking forward to what’s next,” he told Sky.

At the DFB, Musiala will now continue to build up his match and training rhythm. For Bayern, it would be a significant development if the 23-year-old subsequently returns to his usual level of play on a permanent basis.

Matthäus already sees clear signs of this. And for him, Musiala’s regained smile is at least as important as his goals.
