Retired defender is still keen to help his former club

Alderweireld watched on this season as Spurs narrowly avoided relegation, a season in stark contrast to his time at the club, and said in May that he would "do everything in his power" to help the club if asked.

The club have since acknowledged a need to improve the culture at the club after a chastening season, and Alderweireld has again thrown his hat into the ring to help out.

Speaking exclusively to Standard Sport, Alderweireld confirmed that Spurs have not yet been in touch.

He explained: "I was asked, 'Imagine if Spurs asked you, would you want to help the team or the club?' I said, 'Yeah, why not?' Let's see.

"I'm not saying that I will fix every problem. Of course not. But if they ask me what I think, of course I want to try to help. But I'm not saying I can fix it all.

"Antwerp was an unbelievable end of my career, and that's the club of my heart because it's my city. But I'm so thankful with Spurs, my best period as a football player at my peak.

"I think I've always had a very, very, very good connection with the fans, with the club. Yeah, so I'm very grateful. If I can help, if they want my help, why not?"
