Sunderland are closing in on Kevin Danso after reports of an agreement in principle with Tottenham, with club great Marco Gabbiadini welcoming the potential deal on deadline day.
The 27-year-old Austria international has reportedly agreed personal terms and is on standby for a medical. Tottenham are not expected to sanction an exit until a replacement is secured.
Marco Gabbiadini said: “I think they are sensible signings.”
He was speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle.
“So, yes, another solid signing which we’ve made quite a number of those over the last couple of years.”
The big question before the deadline is who else Sunderland can bring in, particularly in forward areas. Another winger has been a major priority throughout the summer, but it has proved a very difficult market.
There was progress on an ambitious move for Marseille forward Igor Paixao, but for now the Ligue 1 club do not want to lose more players. A U-turn before the deadline is not impossible, and Sunderland are moving on to other targets.
Lyon winger Malick Fofana was one option, but Arsenal have made a late move and are favourites at this stage. Ideally Sunderland would also add a versatile forward after Eliezer Mayenda’s exit earlier this summer, though it remains to be seen if that happens today. It looks set to be a dramatic day.
