Tom Lockyer (30) has been medically cleared to resume his football career nearly two years after suffering a cardiac arrest while playing for Luton Town, marking the end of what the Wales international described as a “long old road” to recovery.
As reported by BBC Sport, the 30-year-old defender has not featured for club or country since collapsing during Luton’s Premier League clash against Bournemouth in December 2023. The incident came just seven months after a similar collapse in the Championship play-off final, where Luton secured promotion to the top flight.
Lockyer’s rehabilitation was prolonged by two ankle surgeries over the past year, but the former Bristol Rovers and Charlton Athletic centre-back has now been given full medical clearance to play again. Speaking on the Feast of Football podcast, he said: “I’m delighted to say I’ve been cleared to play football again. Everything looks good, so I’m really, really happy.”
Although released by Luton after their relegation last season, the club still allowed Lockyer continued access to their medical staff and facilities during his recovery.
