Blues enjoyed a very busy summer window, with the bulk of their business done early on, which included bringing Doyle in on an initial loan deal from Wolves.

However, Chris Davies was still trying to improve the squad going into the 7pm deadline on Monday, and the Midlands outfit finalised a loan move for Roberts from Sunderland.

The 28-year-old arrives with a good pedigree considering he just helped the Black Cats win promotion to the Premier League, but their remarkable spending spree this summer means he has fallen down the pecking order.

Even though he will face a battle to get into Davies’ best XI, Roberts will feel he can get regular game time at St. Andrew’s, and he sent a message to his new fans on Instagram after the switch was announced.

And, Blues midfielder Doyle was among those to reply, as he put a smiley face emoji along with a blue heart in response to the news.

That’s because the duo have known each other since they were teenagers, as Doyle came through the ranks at Man City, with Roberts joining them as a teenager from Fulham.

Patrick Roberts can add an extra spark to Birmingham City’s attack

You can imagine that Blues fans are also as pleased as Doyle to see Roberts pull on the royal blue shirt, as he gives them another option in the final third.

Whilst Birmingham have a lot of attacking talent, Roberts does offer a different profile, as he is someone who will play from the right, and he can cut inside and pick clever passes.

When you add that to the likes of Lewis Koumas, Demarai Gray, Kanya Fujimoto and Keshi Anderson, it’s fair to say that Davies has a plethora of options, and they have a range of qualities, so the head coach can have no complaints about the backing he has received this summer.

Roberts’ arrival could really benefit Kyogo Furuhashi with his excellent movement, so it will be interesting to see what sort of impact he can make on the team over the coming weeks and months.
