Tonda Eckert weighs up Larin start for Watford opener | OneFootball

Tonda Eckert has not ruled out Cyle Larin starting Southampton’s Championship opener at Watford. According to Daily Echo, a decision will follow later in the week.

Larin marked his return by scoring the opener in Saturday’s 2-0 Carabao Cup win at Colchester United, minutes after coming on. Ryan Manning delivered to the back post and the striker guided it in. Academy forward Romeo Akachukwu, 20, added a stoppage-time second after also coming off the bench.

Eckert said the forward is being built up after a summer break and that caution is required despite the desire to play him. He added there is a chance Larin might start, with plans to consult the player before deciding. He noted Larin communicates well and understands his body.

Larin starred on loan at St Mary’s in the second half of last season, scoring nine goals. He then signed a permanent two-year deal before heading to the World Cup, where he scored twice as the home nation Canada reached the round of 16.

The 31-year-old was given an extended summer and missed pre-season with Saints. Southampton travel to Watford on Sunday, kick-off 1.30pm.
