Bilbao Athletic slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Lugo as two finely judged offside calls against Gift and Asier Hierro, verified by the FVS in the Primera Federación at the Anxo Carro, denied them. As reported by as.com, the visitors had done enough to feel they merited at least a point.
Nico Reniero's winner was helped by a bobble in the mud inside Mikel Santos's six-yard box, which nudged a shot that seemed to be drifting past the right post back on target.
Two weeks earlier, the second string had suffered a tough loss at Valdebebas after an offside goal from César Palacios.
Amid the frustration, Unax Urzaiz Iriondo, born in Bilbao in 2007 and son of former Athletic striker Ismael Urzaiz and grandson of Rafa Iriondo, made his debut. The 18-year-old came on in the 85th minute for Adrián Pérez, operated from the right and took set pieces that pinned Lugo back.
From his delivery came the cross for Hierro's finish that was ruled out in the 88th minute.
Wearing No 34, he had previously been called up against Racing de Ferrol and Barakaldo. He has scored 3 goals in 14 games this season for CD Basconia, Athletic's second reserve side, in the Segunda Federación.
A Lezama prospect since Alevines after joining from Romo CF, he overcame a pre-season shoulder injury after stepping up from the Juvenil de Honor, where he made 31 appearances and scored 11 last term, and he has renewed his Athletic contract. After Basconia team-mates Conde and Peciña, coach Jokin Aranburu has now handed him a chance in the Primera Federación.
