Alex Crook of talkSPORT reported that the Premier League's basement club had an approach rejected by the Italian side for the Scottish international, which BBC Sport earlier today reported as being a £6.9 million bid.

The 29-year-old has spent the last season and a half in Serie A following a move from Southampton at the culmination of his contract at St Mary's, but before that, he was tearing up the Championship at Birmingham City.

The Blues have been credited with interest in a reunion seven years in the making earlier in the January window, and while it may not look likely in the final hours of this current transfer window, Torino's decision to reject Wolves' advances could open up a future opportunity to see Adams back at St Andrew's.

Wolves fail in Che Adams pursuit — Birmingham City will have a close eye on former player's future

According to the BBC, Adams was keen to move back to the UK this January, following news of Wolves' interest in the Scotsman earlier today.

However, Alex Crook, via X, has revealed that Adams will be staying at Torino, with Wolves settling for Southampton's Adam Armstrong, and four-time England international Angel Gomes expected to be the only arrivals at Molineux on deadline day.

The 29-year-old has been a consistent option for Torino since he made the move to Italy in 2024, scoring 13 times across the last 18 months, including one on Sunday as Il Toro beat Lecce 1-0.

However, it's arguable that Adams has unfinished business in England following his best scoring season in a Southampton shirt in the 2023/24 campaign, and the second-best in his career behind the 22 Championship goals he netted in his final season at Birmingham in 2018/19.

The Scotsman burst onto the scene at St Andrew's, and that campaign earned him a move to the Premier League, where he'd spend the next four seasons. The two parties clearly have a connection, and towards the start of the ongoing January transfer window, the Blues were reported to be "partial to a sentimental signing."

For now, Adams remains in Italy, but there'd be expectations that talks about a move back to the UK will resurface come the summer. As and when they do, Birmingham may be in a position to launch a bid of their own if they so please.

Che Adams would be warmly welcomed back to Birmingham City

Adams was one of the popular former players to appear in Birmingham's 150th anniversary video towards the back end of 2025. In it, he said: "Hopefully see you soon, keep right on."

That excited some Blues fans, as they began to wonder whether a similar sentimental arrival to Demarai Gray's in the summer could have been pulled off for the Scotsman.

Ultimately, it has not. Birmingham has added substantial talent in the forward areas through the likes of Carlos Vicente and August Priske on permanent deals this month, and are unlikely to launch an eleventh-hour bid for their former frontman, especially if the £6.9 million bid from Wolves was rejected.

However, the summer provides a fresh transfer budget and fresh expectations for Birmingham. If it were up to them, they'd be a Premier League club, but even if those goals aren't achieved just yet, they'll still be in a position to be one of the best clubs in the Championship, given the foundations laid down this year.

Therefore, Adams not moving to Wolves increases the opportunity for him to instead depart in the summer, and the Blues will be more capable of bringing the Scotsman back then.

If he does, there arguably wouldn't be a more popular arrival, and everybody, from coaching staff to fans, would be excited to see what Adams could do back in a Birmingham shirt.
