MIAMI – The 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup has reached the quarterfinal stage where the United States, the lone Concacaf nation remaining in the tournament, will face Germany on Sunday at Estadio Olimpico Pascual Guerrero in Cali, Colombia.The U.S. arrives after a thrilling 3-2 win against Concacaf rival Mexico in the Round of 16. The two nations exchanged goals in the first half before the Stars and Stripes finally earned the winner in extra time.Pietra Tordin added another goal to her personal count to reach four in the tournament. Tordin leads the U.S. in goals and is in the hunt for the top scorer award.Jordynn Dudley scored the match-winning goal against Mexico to keep the United States in the title race.Germany arrives to the quarterfinals with a 5-1 victory against Argentina. Loreen Bender and Sophie Nachtigall lead the team with four goals apiece. Both scored in the previous match with Nachtigall earning a brace.

A spot in the semifinal will be on the line when these two nations meet for the eight time in the U-20 World Cup and sixth in the knockout round. The U.S. has won four of the five elimination matches while Germany won both encounters in the group stage.The two nations faced off in the semifinals of the inaugural edition in a 4-1 victory for the U.S., who went on to lift the trophy at Canada 2002. Germany would win the next encounter, 3-1, in a semifinals rematch two years later, and it would be the Europeans who would go on to be champions at Thailand 2004.At Russia 2006, the teams met for a third consecutive tournament where the U.S. once again won by a 4-1 margin, this time in the quarterfinals. The U.S. won its second U-20 World Cup at Chile 2008, but not without first defeating Germany 1-nil in the semifinals.Two meetings were in store at Japan 2012, first in the group stage, where Germany won 3-nil to decide the top spot. The two would meet in the final, where the U.S. won its third title after a 1-nil win.Germany once again earned a group stage win at Canada 2014. The 2-nil German victory decided the group but took place in the opener of both teams’ campaigns, as Germany would go on to lift its third trophy.
