Valencia opened LaLiga 2026-27 with a 0-0 against RC Celta at Mestalla, a blunt start on a landmark night at the ground.
As reported by Superdeporte, this was the final season opener at the historic Mestalla, with the club set to move to Nou Mestalla after this campaign. A minute’s silence honoured valencianistas who have died.
On the pitch, Valencia rarely built sustained pressure and relied on flashes from Danjuma to unsettle the visitors.
Discontent towards the ownership resurfaced in minute 19, when chants calling for Peter Lim to leave and criticism of Meriton Holdings, Kiat Lim and Ron Gourlay echoed around the ground.
Pablo Maffeo made his debut from the bench after only two days with the squad and a single training session. In a disjointed game he had little influence, beyond a short cross, as the team dipped after the changes.
The stalemate drew whistles at full time, with supporters unhappy with the lack of chances and the overall display.
Away from the match, Ramón Planes, previously on Valencia’s radar for a sporting role, remains contracted to Al-Ittihad, though that relationship has been virtually over for weeks. His future is open, keeping his name in play within Spanish football.
