André Almeida has remained at Valencia after rejecting a move to Swansea, and he is not in the plans for 26/27. He was unused in yesterday’s Trofeu Taronja against Newcastle United at Mestalla.

According to Superdeporte, Valencia had agreed his sale with Swansea subject to the player’s approval, but he turned it down as he did not want to play in the second division. Despite eight substitutions, he was the only available first-team outfield player not to feature.

Last week he trained apart on several days as the club pushed for the Swansea exit. The plan was to reinvest the fee in a right-back. He ultimately refused the offer when a deal looked close, and Peter Lim then authorised talks on a new signing without needing Almeida to depart first.

He has since rejoined group training, but was told he does not count and must bring an offer at least matching Swansea’s. There has been interest from Celta de Vigo, yet no firm bid so far.

Only months ago he was considered important. He signed a new contract in September last year to June 2029, with a salary rise of more than 50%, and said he was happy and would help the team.

Nearly a year on, performances have not matched expectations and his Valencia spell looks over. He cut a solitary, pensive figure at Mestalla. Once an offer arrives, he will leave after four seasons defined by inconsistency.
