The Brazilian Football Confederation released VAR audio detailing why Samuel Lino’s late goal for Flamengo against São Paulo on 26 July was disallowed at the Maracanã.

After Lino scored, referee Anderson Daronco waited for confirmation while the VAR team examined the footage.

Officials first checked a possible Arrascaeta handball, then saw the ball had hit the No 10’s face.

The semi-automated offside image then showed Wallace Yan centimetres ahead of a São Paulo defender, so the goal was chalked off.

It was 1-1 at the time, and had it stood Flamengo would have been close to taking all three points.

Since then Flamengo drew 1-1 at Internacional at Beira-Rio in Porto Alegre, then beat Vitória 2-0 at the Maracanã on Sunday, 09. The win cut the gap to Palmeiras to six points, Flamengo on 42 to Palmeiras’ 48.

Next up in the league is Mirassol away on Sunday, 16, at 18h30 Brasília time. Before that comes Cruzeiro in the Libertadores last 16 first leg at the Mineirão, Belo Horizonte, on Wednesday, 12, at 21h30 Brasília time.
