Vasco await court ruling in bid to host Vitória at Maracanã | OneFootball

Vasco are awaiting a court decision on Monday over their attempt to stage Wednesday’s Copa do Brasil quarter-final first leg against Vitória at the Maracanã. According to PaponaColina, the club remain intent on using the venue after the operator rejected their request.

The concessionaire, jointly managed by Flamengo and Fluminense, denied access citing the need to protect the pitch during scheduled maintenance from 23 to 29 August.

In their filing, Vasco argued the stadium is a public asset with far greater capacity than São Januário, better suited to high demand. They pointed to recent full houses at their own ground, noting 21,254 tickets issued against Olimpia and 21,228 attendees versus Santos.

The operator told the court the refusal was solely due to the maintenance timetable, adding Vasco have played there six times since April 2025. It said a midweek match would hinder recovery ahead of future events, including the NFL Rio Game on 27 September.

The dispute centres on a Memorando de Entendimentos signed in 2025. Vasco say it granted four dates in 2026, expressly covering Copa do Brasil knockout ties, while the consortium argues its validation field was left blank and any use depends on calendar availability and pitch operations.

Vasco treat the matter as urgent to open ticket sales and arrange transport, security and member guidance. If the injunction goes against them and appeals are exhausted, the first leg would need to move elsewhere, probably São Januário.
