Vasco will host Vitória in the Copa do Brasil quarter-final first leg at São Januário after an unsuccessful bid to secure the Maracanã through the courts.
According to Coluna Do Fla, Flamengo and Fluminense, who jointly run the Maracanã consortium, blocked Vasco’s request because of the condition of the pitch.
Vasco SAF pursued legal action, arguing it had grounds to schedule fixtures at the venue in 2026 after failing to obtain approval from the consortium. The case was filed in the third Civil Court of the Santa Cruz Regional branch under judge Talita Bretz Cardoso de Mello.
The administrators stated the week from 23 to 29 August was set aside for turf recovery, so staging the game at the Maracanã on 26 August was deemed unworkable.
The first leg is scheduled for 21:30 Brasília time on 26 August at São Januário.
The Maracanã pitch will rest for a week without matches, with Flamengo next to host Botafogo there on Sunday 30, in the 25th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro.
