Rayan and Andrés Gómez led the way for Vasco as Vegetti struck the decisive winner in a come-from-behind victory over Fluminense in the semi-final first leg.
According to Globo.com, Vasco laboured before the break, then returned with far greater control and fully earned the result.
Léo Jardim endured a poor first half, booked after a rash charge and culpable for the foul before Fluminense’s goal. Paulo Henrique struggled on the right, while Carlos Cuesta was the pick of the back line.
Improvised at left-back, Puma Rodríguez twice went close, meeting a Thiago Mendes pass to force a save and heading a Coutinho corner against the post. He offered aerial presence but had problems containing Serna.
Cauan Barros was tireless in midfield, producing key recoveries. Thiago Mendes distributed well and helped shackle Lucho Acosta, while Philippe Coutinho linked play and delivered the corner for Puma’s header. Nuno Moreira improved after the interval before departing, and Hugo Moura came on late.
Gómez delivered his best display for the club, then created Rayan’s equaliser and crossed for Vegetti’s winner. Rayan, seen as the team’s standout this year, levelled, won a foul, restarted quickly and drove the move for the turnaround. Vegetti, who had scored in only one of Vasco’s previous 18 matches this year, needed one chance to settle it.
Coach Fernando Diniz made only two substitutions, and the introduction of Vegetti proved inspired.
