The countdown has begun at São Januário, with two weeks until Brazil’s first transfer window closes on three March. Vasco da Gama are pushing for a final addition, a starting midfielder, while keeping their biggest spend for the mid-year market. According to PaponaColina, the club are limiting outlay now despite money available.
The hierarchy believe they have already invested heavily with the arrivals of Andrés Gómez, Brenner, Marino Hinestroza, Alan Saldivia, Spinelli and Cuiabano. Their main financial firepower is being reserved for the mid-year window, when European opportunities are broader and often higher quality.
Recruiting a midfielder remains the priority, but it is not straightforward. Vasco are scanning options available on loan or approaching the end of contracts. The technical bar is high, they want a player to start immediately rather than bulk out the squad.
Several early targets proved beyond the present budget, which has forced the football department to get creative in these final days.
While they hunt a single reinforcement, Vasco are also managing exits. 16 departures have already helped slim the 2026 wage bill, and further loans are not ruled out. Midfielders Estrella and JP could be sent out, following the path taken by forward GB to Fortaleza to gain minutes and experience.
