Vasco thrash Olimpia 4-1 to reach Sudamericana last eight after 14 years | OneFootball

Vasco beat Olimpia 4-1 on Thursday night at Defensores del Chaco, sealing a place in the Copa Sudamericana quarter-finals.

According to Globo.com, it is the club’s first appearance in the last eight of a continental competition since 2012.

Back then, Vasco drew the first leg with Corinthians at São Januário, then lost 1-0 at Pacaembu to a Paulinho goal and went out.

Despite sitting second-bottom in the Brasileirão and battling relegation, Vasco remain alive in every competition and face Vitória in the Copa do Brasil quarter-finals next Wednesday.

This is only the third year they will play quarter-finals in both the Copa do Brasil and a CONMEBOL competition. The others were 1998, when they won the Libertadores, and 2011, when they lifted the domestic cup.

In the Sudamericana they await the winner of River Plate v Santa Fe, who meet in Buenos Aires next Wednesday after a 0-0 first leg in Bogotá. The quarter-finals are set for the weeks of 9 and 16 September.
