Leeds United Under-21s kickstart their Vertu Trophy campaign with an exciting test against Sky Bet League One outfit Port Vale away from home.

The competition pits elite Academy sides against third and fourth tier opposition, similar in style to the National League Cup which the Whites lifted last season.

Scott Gardner’s team go into the tie on the back of a deserved 2-1 victory over Burnley U21s at Turf Moor, courtesy of goals from Louie Dudley and Harry Gray.

The striker continued his rich vein of form to start the new term, where he has now netted four times in the opening three Premier League 2 matches.

Since earning promotion last term, Port Vale have struggled for form on their return to League One and are winless in six. Last time out, Darren Moore’s side were narrowly edged out by Reading.

The team do have history in the competition, however, having lifted the trophy in 1993 and 2001. Last term, the Valiants reached the Round of 16.

Gardner’s side will also face Accrington Stanley and Fleetwood in Group G. Action from Vale Park gets underway at 7pm.

The view from inside the camp:

Ahead of the clash, boss Gardner said: “We have got a big challenge on Tuesday night against the senior side. What an opportunity for the players.

“It is a massive opportunity for everybody that will be involved to play against a League One side. They have shown at National League level that what we can do after last season so this is a big opportunity like I say for them to go against the senior side.”
