Villarreal came away with a 2-1 victory from the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan away to Sevilla, who were down to ten men for the final stages of the game. They did so courtesy of a goal created by new signing Georges Mikautadze, and scored by loan signing Manor Solomon.

The latter came on and got on the end of Mikautadze’s cross, and sparked wild celebrations on the Villarreal bench. It was before that goal that the Sevilla fans had taken a disliking to him though.

Sevilla ultras rile up reception for Solomon

The on-loan Tottenham Hotspur winger hails from Israel, and ahead of the game, Sevilla ultra group Biris Norte had posted on their social media making it clear that he was not welcome at their stadium, as pointed out by Marca.

“Tomorrow this defender of genocide visits our home, we are clear about it… In Nervión there is no space for Zionists! #FreePlastine”

When Solomon came on, the Sevilla fans whistled Solomon, but chants of ‘Israel assassinates’ could be heard from a section of the crowd.

‘I’m not here to talk about politics’ – Solomon

The treatment of Solomon harks back to posts he made on social media in favour of Israel bombing Gaza during their invasion of Palestine. That was the spark for plenty of abuse while he was playing in England, and Villarreal’s own fans were already critical of the club on social media for making the signing.

After being presented as a Villarreal player, Solomon told the media that ‘he was not at Villarreal to talk politics.‘ After the game, Solomon sent a message on social media to the Villarreal fans implying he was not overly concerned.

“Hello Groguets, happy for the goal and the win. Endavant Villarreal.”

Another Yellow Submarine singing was targeted last week by Spurs fans themselves, who whistled Thomas Partey, with Villarreal garnering plenty of blowback for signing the Ghanaian, who has been charged with five counts of rape and two counts of sexual assault. The trial is ongoing, with Partey denying all charges.
