Former Brazil striker Viola has been handed a three years and 10 months open-regime sentence for illegal firearm possession, which has been replaced by community service.
According to Globo.com, the case dates back to 2012 when his ex-wife filed the action. After losing custody of his son, Viola locked himself inside his home with the boy, and police later found a shotgun, a revolver and ammunition.
He spent five days in custody at the time. Judge Gustavo Nardi of the São Paulo Court of Justice accepted the public prosecutor's request and convicted him.
The custodial term was commuted to community service for the full duration, to be set by the enforcement court.
He must also pay a fine pegged to the minimum wage in 2012. The former forward may appeal.
Now 57, Viola won the 1994 World Cup with Brazil and had notable spells with Corinthians, Palmeiras, Santos and Vasco. He also played in Türkiye and Spain.
