Vasco’s Copa do Brasil progression over Fluminense at the Maracanã on Wednesday came with a viral moment, as a mixed-allegiance couple argued while their son, in a half-and-half shirt, watched on. The pair have since played down the incident.

According to Globo.com, Nivia Martini and Luciano Nery said in Niterói that the exchange was brief and about who controlled the opening stages. Martini felt Vasco started on top before Fluminense responded, while Nery’s gestures insisted Vasco were dominant. She said it looked far bigger on video than it was.

Nery said the clips drew millions of views, with people recognising them in the street and his phone inundated with messages. He noted comments about his physical condition, adding he takes pride in it as a sign of victory, explaining he had a benign brain tumour removed 10 years ago.

Their son, Bernardo, wore a shirt split between Fluminense and Vasco, a choice that also drew attention. He said he will keep it for clássicos, but wears each club’s shirt for that team’s games. He added that classmates urged him to switch to Flamengo, replying, “Never, Flamengo never.”

The parents said Bernardo is free to choose his colours and they will continue to let him decide.
