Wales secured a nervy but vital 1-0 victory against Liechtenstein on Saturday evening, setting up a winner-takes-all World Cup qualifying showdown with North Macedonia in Cardiff on Tuesday.

Jordan James netted his first international goal, converting a Daniel James cutback just after the hour mark to finally break the deadlock. The crucial win, however, came at a significant cost. Both the goalscorer and captain, Ethan Ampadu, picked up yellow cards, ruling them out of the decisive group finale.

With manager Craig Bellamy suspended, assistant Piet Cremers oversaw a performance that was dominant in possession but struggled for creativity. Wales found it difficult to break down the deep-lying hosts, ranked 206th in the world, until the breakthrough finally arrived. The result leaves Wales level on points with North Macedonia, with a coveted home play-off semi-final spot on the line.

Here is how each player rated in Vaduz:

Wales Player Ratings vs Liechtenstein

Goalkeeper & Defence

Karl Darlow – 6/10 A complete spectator. Liechtenstein failed to register a single shot on target, leaving Darlow with nothing to do but claim an effortless clean sheet.

Neco Williams – 7/10 Provided the one moment of true quality that unlocked the defence with his precise pass for the goal. His energy was constant, though he’ll be disappointed to have missed a headed chance.

Dylan Lawlor – 6/10 Yet another ideal and untroubled start in international football for the youngster. He was never tested defensively and showed calmness on the ball when building play.

Joe Rodon – 6/10 The senior figure in the backline. He was assured in his defensive duties and looked to be the main initiator of attacks with his confident passing from deep.

Jay Dasilva – 6/10 Offered good balance on the left, combining well with Sorba Thomas. He was efficient in possession and provided a reliable outlet for the team.

Midfield & Attack

Daniel James – 8/10 Wales’ most potent weapon. His pace was a constant threat, and he was unlucky not to score himself, having hit the woodwork. Showed great awareness to provide the intelligent cutback for the winner.

Jordan James – 8/10 (Player of the Match) The match-winner. He was bright and inventive throughout, showing great anticipation to arrive at the far post and convert the decisive goal. His late booking, however, is a massive blow.

Ethan Ampadu – 6/10 The captain dictated the game’s tempo from his deep-lying role, recycling possession with ease. His night was ruined by a rash and unnecessary challenge that earned a costly suspension.

Sorba Thomas – 7/10 Continued his excellent run of form for his country. His deliveries from set-pieces were a constant threat, and he was a livewire on the wing.

Mark Harris – 6/10 A selfless performance. His relentless pressing and intelligent off-ball movement were commendable, but he was starved of any real goalscoring opportunities.

Nathan Broadhead – 7/10 Looked the most likely to find a breakthrough. He was unlucky to have a goal disallowed by VAR and showed great skill to beat the ‘keeper before narrowly missing from a tight angle.

Substitutes

Rubin Colwill (for Broadhead, 66′) – 6/10 Made his presence felt immediately, forcing a good save with a low drive.

David Brooks (for D. James, 66′) – 6/10 Brought his trademark composure and class to the game against a tiring defence.

Lewis Koumas (for Harris, 66′) – 5/10 Looked sharp and linked play well, but will be having nightmares about the gilt-edged one-on-one chance he put wide.

Liam Cullen (for J. James, 77′) – N/A Brought on for the final stages to help see the game out.

Brennan Johnson (for Thomas, 83′) – N/A A late introduction with the result already secured.
