Walsall talking points: Grant’s home bow, flank frailties and midfield hints | OneFootball

Lee Grant’s first Bescot outing ended in a 5-0 pre-season defeat to Aston Villa on Tuesday.

As reported by ExpressAndStar.com, Walsall started brightly and on the front foot. Villa then struck midway through the first half when Kosta Nedeljkovic crossed for Brian Madjo. He added a second before the break, with George Hemmings, Luka Lynch and Aidan Borland also scoring for Unai Emery’s side.

Grant used a 4-2-3-1, Alex Pattison on the right and Andrew Dallas supporting Aaron Pressley. An aggressive press unsettled Villa early before their quality told.

The new head coach was vocal, repeatedly urging a high line. It signalled attacking intent, though it did not bring reward.

Walsall were exposed down the left. Mason Hancock allowed Nedeljkovic space to cross for the opener, then Leon Bailey and Emi Buendia combined for the second.

In midfield, Sven Sprangler partnered Coventry City loanee Isaac Moore in a double pivot. Their blend could work next season, and Grant’s task is to quicken the attack so their qualities show.

New signings Declan Skura and Ryan Leak started. Fitness remains the priority in pre-season and Villa’s youthful side provided a stern test. Friendlies against AFC Telford United and Notts County should offer a clearer gauge, and with nine arrivals, patience may be needed before everything comes together.
