Southampton rejected Aston Villa’s £24m offer for Taylor Harwood-Bellis, with Tonda Eckert indicating the call was above him after leaving the defender out against Stoke City on Saturday. According to Sainstmarching.com, Saints want £25m and the centre-back has two years left on his deal.
Mark Robins said he saw the second goal coming when Divin Mubama shifted to his left in the 89th minute. He also felt Svante Ingelsson’s second yellow should be revisited.
Ryan Manning said team-mates pointed to him before he took the added-time penalty, which he rolled into the bottom corner for his first of the season. The win lifted Saints to minus one, and victory over Millwall next Saturday could take them out of the relegation zone after only three matches.
Kuryu Matsuki laboured in central midfield, with Cameron Bragg backed to come in alongside Flynn Downes. Owner Dragan Solak watched on, and Eckert said he did not look over but that the owner’s presence meant a lot.
West Ham visit St Mary’s in the Carabao Cup second round on Tuesday, kick-off 7.45pm. Saints advanced by beating Colchester United, while West Ham scored three against Portsmouth. With both prioritising promotion after West Ham’s relegation last season, it looks a rotation night and an early look at a rival.
A centre-back could still arrive regardless, with OH Leuven’s Roggerio Nyakossi among options. Cameron Archer has yet to leave the bench in either league game, and a loan would give him minutes he is not getting at St Mary’s.
