Southampton have re-signed former captain James Ward-Prowse on a two-year deal, confirming his return to St Mary’s.

According to Daily Echo, West Ham will receive a nominal fee to release the 31-year-old from the final year of his contract, following his £30 million switch in 2023.

He featured 75 times and had loan spells at Nottingham Forest and Burnley, taking his Premier League tally to 422 appearances.

Ward-Prowse renews a 20-year association with the club, having joined the academy at eight and amassed 410 appearances in his first spell. That stint included European campaigns, an EFL Cup final and 55 goals. He now strengthens Tonda Eckert’s midfield.

He described the return as surreal after an intense few days, saying wearing red and white again feels special and that Southampton is home after his rise through the academy. He always kept a move back in mind and is excited for the challenge.

Group sporting director Johannes Spors said the midfielder’s connection to the club is clear and that he will add significant value on and off the pitch.

Ward-Prowse has been registered and is available for Saturday’s Championship meeting with leaders Millwall.
