Following their win over Elche over the weekend, FC Barcelona managed to extend their lead over Real Madrid at the top of the La Liga standings to four points.
And when Los Blancos took on Rayo Vallecano on Sunday afternoon, it seemed like they would be unable to cut into the Catalans’ advantage by a significant margin.
After all, the game seemed to be headed to a 1-1 draw, with Jorge de Frutos cancelling out Vinicius Jr.’s opener at the Santiago Bernabeu.
However, there was controversy late on, as not only did the referee add nine minutes as stoppage time, but he also went on to award a very questionable penalty to Real Madrid in the final moments for a foul on Brahim Diaz.
Kylian Mbappe, as he has done for most of the season, stepped up to convert yet another controversial penalty awarded to his team, ensuring Real Madrid finished 2-1 winners – cutting Barça’s lead to just one point.
Now, Barcelona president Joan Laporta has given his take on the penalty that was awarded to Real Madrid on Sunday afternoon.
While attending the Mundo Deportivo gala, the Barça chief was asked what he thought of the controversial moment that unfolded at the Santiago Bernabeu.
In response, Laporta pretended like he was diving, as he said, “It was a dive”, before breaking into laughter, with the clip going viral.
The Barcelona president has not shied away from talking about how Real Madrid have had some dodgy calls from referees going their way, even calling out the RMTV videos for putting pressure on match officials.
“Our opponent has created an atmosphere around the refereeing team that is out of place,” he had said back in October, before the first El Clasico of the season.
“With what their television network is doing, they’re influencing the referees; it’s a strategy for winning that shouldn’t exist.”
