Even though the NUFC boss made eight changes, it never ever really looked like the visitors were going to prevent it becoming four defeats in a row for Spurs at St James’ Park, with now 14 goals conceded in four losses on Tyneside.

It also made it three Newcastle United victories in a row in the space of just over a week, this trio of wins coming in three different competitions.

Spurs had the odd moment but Aaran Ramsdale equal to them, one stunning save in particular in the first half from Sarr.

However, Harvey Barnes hit the bar with a volley and should have done better than that when played in on the left earlier.

In the end it was Fabian Schar and Nick Woltemade who headed United into the quarter-finals.

You had to laugh at the moaning from Spurs fans and their players, especially about the first goal.

As you can see from the highlights, Spence clearly doing this on purpose as he ‘tried’ to adjust the bows on his pink slippers four or five times, before even this useless referee lost patience and finally allowed Tonali to take the corner that Schar scored from.

Seeing/hearing the complaints from the Spurs players and their supporters is just a bonus.

A great night and some real quality moments.
