“We Have to Deal With That Negativity” – Chris Wilder Issues Sheffield United Warning After Stoke Defeat | OneFootball

Sheffield United suffered a painful 2-1 defeat away at Stoke City on Saturday afternoon, surrendering a lead late on to leave Chris Wilder’s side facing a third consecutive defeat in all competitions.

The Blades looked on course to return from the Bet365 Stadium with at least a point after taking the lead early in the second half, but two stunning long-range strikes from the hosts turned the game on its head.

United did not have to wait long after half-time to break the deadlock. The Blades were awarded a free-kick in a position where a delivery into the penalty area appeared to be the obvious choice, but Kalvin Phillips had other ideas.

The midfielder stepped up and opted to go directly for goal, catching Viktor Johansson off guard with a low effort towards the Stoke goalkeeper’s near post.

Having gone in front, the Blades had an opportunity to take control of the contest and see the game out. Instead, Stoke found a way back into the game with just 11 minutes of normal time remaining.

Jack McGlynn collected possession around 30 yards from goal and, with little appearing to be on, decided to try his luck. The midfielder’s effort was struck brilliantly, flying beyond Michael Cooper and into the top corner.

The Blades almost responded immediately. Phillips sent a dangerous cross into the penalty area which Stoke failed to clear convincingly, with the loose ball falling to Sydie Peck on the edge of the box. Peck attempted to restore United’s advantage, but his effort sailed over the crossbar.

With just four minutes remaining, Stoke completed their comeback with another long-range effort. Ethan Galbraith sent a ball forward towards substitute Sam Gallagher, with several Sheffield United players appealing for an offside decision. The flag stayed down because Jamie Shackleton kept him onside. Gallagher brought the ball under control before turning towards goal and shooting in one movement, sending a 20-yard effort beyond Cooper and into the net.

Wilder Addresses Growing Negativity

Speaking to SUTV after the match, Wilder acknowledged that the mood around the club is likely to become increasingly negative following three straight defeats, but insisted that it remains far too early to make long-term judgments on his side.

“When does the season get judged? It’s an emotional game that we’re all in. Are we on the right track? In my opinion, yeah because the last two performances are against the teams that, as we talked about, are a team this year that’s really improved their squad.

“I want the performances to be better, but it’s far too early to make longer-term judgments on anything in my opinion. After six or seven [games]. There’s always going to be a certain element that will want and will think that we should be right in and amongst the top two or top three, which you can never change.

“If we’re in a position around Christmas time that’s unacceptable then you look at that and say you really deserve the stuff that’s going off the back of [results]. But that’s the name of the game at the moment and we are the only ones that can adjust it.”

Sheffield United Need to Regroup in International Break

The Blades now have a period away from competitive action to regroup, with Wilder fully aware of the challenge that awaits when Championship football resumes.

“We’ve got a home game coming back [against Lincoln City after the international break] and I understand that the narrative there will be pretty negative. And the players have got to show what they’re about and feel that and rise to the challenge.”

Wilder also directly addressed those supporters who are becoming increasingly concerned about the direction of the team. “To the most negative of Sheffield United fans out there, we’ve got done today by two absolute screamers late on and you come away with a win, or you come away with a draw, and the feeling is a little bit better. But we have to deal with that negativity.”

For the Blades, the international break arguably comes at a welcome time. Three successive defeats have changed the mood around Bramall Lane, and while Wilder is right that the season cannot be judged after only a handful of matches, the statistics are aligning with the eye test, and it does not look pretty at S2 right now.
