FC Barcelona went toe-to-toe with European champions Paris Saint-Germain last night but were unfortunate to concede a late goal that resulted in their defeat at Montjuic. The match ultimately ended 1-2 in the French side’s favor, but both sides had several opportunities to increase their advantage.
As Mundo Deportivo has reported, Hansi Flick still believed that Luis Enrique’s team was the better one on the night as he talked to the press after the match. However, he also highlighted that his team performed better in the first half than in the second:
“In the first half, during the first half hour, we were better than in the second, but we didn’t play at our best level against a rival that deserved the victory. They are a great team.”
The German coach also conceded that two of his starting midfielders are quite fatigued:
“Pedri and Frenkie have played a lot of minutes, and for us it’s important that they are fresh.”
The Barcelona trainer highlighted what went wrong in the second half:
“In the second half, some players were tired, but they gave their all. At 1-1, we needed to defend better; we have to learn and improve.”
Hansi Flick also conceded that his Barcelona team is not yet up to the level of PSG:
“Today we can’t say we’re at the same level, but I believe in the team, and today we didn’t show our best version.”
The German coach went on to recognize how the substitutions made by PSG helped them get the win:
“Their philosophy is fantastic, young players who are very good and have fresher legs. The ones who came on raised the level.”
The Blaugrana manager expressed his happiness with Eric Garcia in particular:
“I see him play and it’s fantastic, and that pleases me.”
Flick also noted some areas where his team needs to improve going forward:
“We have to last the full ninety minutes, we need to be better in defense, in ball possession, and in exploiting spaces.”
This defeat would understandably be hurting for Flick and the team, but Barcelona did put up a tough fight against one of the very best teams in Europe.
However, as Hansi Flick commented, the team still needs to improve going forward, and it remains to be seen whether these improvements will come in the coming months.
