The 35-year-old Lyon captain lodged a legal complaint on Tuesday after a deepfake video used her image to push investment in an artificial intelligence project.
According to AFP, her lawyer, Laurent Burgy, said he had filed a complaint for identity theft and that she wanted to protect potential victims as well as her image. The video was aimed particularly at residents of Martinique, where she was born.
On Monday night, she condemned the scam on X, Instagram and Facebook. She said a video created with AI was circulating without her consent, rejected its content as not reflecting her words, values or position, and urged people to stay vigilant and avoid sharing false information.
Renard, a former France captain, is not an influencer, her lawyer stressed, adding that the only place she wishes to commit is on the pitch.
Deepfakes impersonating public figures are becoming more common on social networks, used in financial and cryptocurrency scams, false political endorsements, fake product sales and romance fraud.
