Werder Bremen run riot in 3-1 victory over RB Leipzig | OneFootball

In a result that no one should have expected Werder Bremen trounced RB Leipzig, winning 3-1 on a beautiful day at the Weserstadion.

Bremen started on the foot, very much boosted by their raucous home crowd. They pressed high up the field, flying forward to win the ball back.

A goal came moments later. They gained possession in the final third, and Chuki slipped in Eren Dinkci, who did the rest by calmly slotting home from close range.

That hot opening faded a bit as Leipzig took a hold of possession, digging the opposition in deep.

The away side nearly won a penalty, which called after woeful back pass from Arthur forced a tackle out of goalkeeper Karl Hein. However, VAR stepped in, and a review showed that he got a touch on the ball. No spot-kick was given.

RB’s biggest chance came shortly afterwards. A wonderful cross from Ridle Baku was redirected towards goal by Christopher Nkunku, but it went right at Hein.

Both teams moved the ball well, but that was it in terms of major chances in the first half.

Viewers almost saw the goal of the season shortly after the break. Youri Regeer won the ball, dribbled past a defender, and then went for an audacious lob from near midfield. Maarten Vandevoordt was scrambling, but just managed to tip it onto the bar before the danger was cleared away.

Werder doubled their advantage in the 68th minute, when Niclas Fullkrug powered a header into the back of the net from a corner. He was left unmarked, but it was still a remarkable finish given his distance from the net.

Leipzig then came incredibly close on two occasions in the matter of seconds. A corner was cleared off the line, and then Antonio Nusa curled an effort that pinged off the crossbar and out.

The home side kept pushing forward on the break, and after Chuki went inches wide, they had their killer goal. A bouncing ball fell to Marco Grull, and he made the most of the break by settling the ball and volleying it into the bottom corner.

Baku did grab a consolation goal for the visitors, mainly thanks to a great cross from Andrija Maksimovic. It wasn’t nearly enough, though, and Werder secured a massive win in their early-season push.

“I think it’s the perfect start for both of us, and for us as a team it was great for us to have three different goalscorers. For Eren (Dinkci) it was a good first start, and straight away to get a good feeling, it's always good as a striker if you score your first goal very early. It feels like you break something, and you can start to flow. That's why I feel really positive for him. He had a good game. He could run a lot, but also Marco Grull was insane today, and everyone was top,” said Niclas Fullkrug after the game.
