There’s movement in the transfer saga surrounding João Palhinha. Aston Villa has publicly confirmed for the first time that it is considering signing the Bayern star. Sporting director Damián Vidagany also revealed that talks are already underway between the clubs. However, no agreement has been reached yet.

Bayern Munich would like to sell Palhinha during the current transfer window if possible. The Portuguese player no longer plays a key role in Vincent Kompany’s sporting plans and is one of the record champion’s most prominent candidates for a transfer.

Aston Villa is now a concrete suitor. Sporting director Damián Vidagany confirmed to BILD that the Europa League champions are looking to strengthen their midfield.

The reason for this is a serious injury to Amadou Onana. “We need a midfielder, as Amadou Onana will be out for the entire season, and João Palhinha is a very good player who would fit well into our plans,” Vidagany explained.

Of particular interest from Munich’s perspective: this is no longer just a matter of casual interest. “We are in talks, but there is no agreement yet,” confirmed the Villa boss.

This could present Bayern with a concrete opportunity to transfer the 31-year-old this summer. So far, potential transfers have primarily fallen through due to financial constraints. Munich is reportedly still seeking a transfer fee in the range of 20 to 25 million euros for Palhinha. Added to this is the Portuguese player’s comparatively high salary.

Compared to the Portuguese clubs that are also interested, Aston Villa has significantly greater financial resources. In particular, Onana’s long-term absence could now prompt the English club to step up its efforts.

Excellent relationship with Eberl and Freund

Vidagany also emphasized the good relationship between the two clubs. Should a transfer actually take place, he said, it would “always be based on the great respect we have for FC Bayern.”

The Spaniard added: “Our clubs are on friendly terms, and our relationship with Max Eberl, Christoph Freund, and all the other decision-makers is excellent.”

Vidagany therefore did not want to reveal any further details. Nevertheless, his statements send a clear signal: Aston Villa is actively pursuing Palhinha and is already in negotiations with Bayern.

For Max Eberl and Christoph Freund, this could open an important door. After weeks of searching for a buyer, Palhinha’s departure now seems to be at least a step closer.
