West Brom were unable to land a striker on deadline day, with James Morrison insisting any deal had to fit the club’s budget and value.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, Albion pursued a centre-forward before Tuesday’s cut-off but could not strike an agreement, as Southampton’s former Villa forward Cameron Archer instead joined Auxerre on a loan heavily weighted towards wages.

Morrison said it was not for the want of trying, and added: "We're not in that position to just wallop 10 million quid. Obviously we tried with some deals, but it just didn't work out, and that's life."

Right-back Brayann Pereira was the sole deadline recruit, the 10th signing of the summer, arriving from NEC Nijmegen for £1m. He was not registered in time to feature in Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Charlton at The Hawthorns.

The Frenchman will compete with compatriot Nolan Galves. Morrison believes Galves has quality going forward, accepts he needs work defensively, and says the staff will knit it together because there is a good player there.

Planned loan exits for youngsters Alex Williams, Ollie Bostock and Cole Deeming did not materialise due to a lack of interest. Morrison said the academy graduates should seek National League minutes, which remain possible outside the window, and in the meantime they must continue their work to push into his plans.
