Former West Bromwich Albion boss Carlos Corberan has been sacked by La Liga outfit Valencia, with just five league games played in Spanish football's top flight thus far.

Having drawn their opening game with Celta Vigo, Valencia have since lost four in a row, scoring just once and conceding 10 in the process. Carlos Corberan had been managing the club since leaving West Brom in December 2024.

The Spaniard won 47 of the 107 games he managed with the Baggies, as well as 28 in 72 matches for Valencia. He has previously taken charge of Cypriot sides Doxa and Ermis, Greek giants Olympiacos, and Huddersfield Town.

What West Brom fan pundit Callum Burgess was asked about the sacking and if he is surprised that it ended up going so pear-shaped for Corberan at Valencia. We asked if he expects to see the 43-year-old back in the Championship following his sacking in recent days.

He replied: "I think they're well-known circumstances in the background with Valencia. It makes it difficult for any manager to succeed there.

"It's well known about the difficulties they are facing as an ownership and the financial struggles of the club, so it was probably a matter of time for what Corberan could only deal with, with his hands tied behind his back for so long.

"I think that, if he is to go to a Championship team, then they'll be very lucky. But I think he will be looking at a top flight club, perhaps.

"One of the teams that are battling relegation if they decide to part ways with their manager. I think he could be someone that they could line up.

"With his success at Albion taking us from relegation struggles at the time under Steve Bruce. He didn't live up to the expectations that he tried to set there. Corberan took us up the table.

"He did deal with the troubles at the bottom of the table at Valencia for so long, but he did eventually part ways there. But, I think, definitely, he'll be at that type of club that will be eyeing him up in the future."

Corberan has built a serious reputation despite his latest spell ending in disappointment at Valencia. His Championship work with Huddersfield Town, who he took to the 2022 play-off final, first established him as one of England's most highly regarded young coaches.

He then impressed at West Brom, guiding them into the play-off picture before Valencia came calling in December 2024. At the Mestalla, he inherited a club in serious turmoil and successfully secured La Liga survival before leading them to ninth last season.

His dismissal has come after a disastrous start, but Valencia are bottom with one point from five games and have simultaneously dismissed CEO Ron Gourlay, highlighting the wider instability. That should not damage his reputation whatsoever.

Corberan is unlikely to rush back into the Championship, with his reputation strong enough that he could reasonably hold out for another opportunity in a top-flight league. However, several clubs should at least be testing the waters.

Burnley, currently struggling near the bottom after an extremely poor start, would make obvious sense given their resources and ambition. Wrexham are another intriguing option after a difficult opening spell under Phil Parkinson, particularly following their heavy defeat to West Ham United.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are perhaps the most interesting possibility. They have collected a decent points haul, but their performances have certainly not been entirely convincing, while Corberan knows the region from his time at West Brom.

A move to Molineux would be controversial, but Wolves could offer the financial package to make the job tempting. That said, Callum may well be right about Corberan holding out for a move to a team at the bottom end of one of the Big Five leagues in Europe.
