West Bromwich Albion are in talks to recruit Celtic coach Gavin Strachan as James Morrison reshapes his backroom team.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, Morrison is keen to bring the 47-year-old, son of Scotland great Gordon, to The Hawthorns for his first full season in charge.

Strachan has spent the past six years on Celtic’s staff, working under Neil Lennon, Ange Postecoglou, Brendan Rodgers and, most recently, Martin O’Neill. The former midfielder played for Coventry and Hartlepool, and assisted Darren Ferguson at Doncaster Rovers and Peterborough.

Morrison has been moving to lock in his coaching group before pre-season. He remains hopeful Matt Gill will stay after the pair steered the Baggies to Championship safety, and he is eyeing former Middlesbrough team-mate Tony McMahon for a role. McMahon lifted the FA Youth Cup with Morrison in 2004 and was most recently director of football at York City.

Appointed permanent head coach at season’s end, Morrison had indicated a summer reshuffle. During the run-in he chose not to add further staff after meeting candidates, concluding there was no immediate need.

Albion are also close to their first signings of the summer, with deals for strikers Barney Stewart and Jimmy-Jay Morgan. Stewart is set to join from Falkirk for a seven-figure fee, while Morgan, 20, is due from Chelsea for about £1.3million.
