West Bromwich Albion have begun the 2026/27 campaign in excellent form, carrying on where they left off last season under James Morrison, and with the summer window drawing to a close, there remains time for the Baggies to seal some crucial business.

West Brom have won both of their opening Championship games of the season, defeating Norwich City on the road and Burnley at home in comfortable fashion, with Morrison distilling confidence back into the club after a difficult year last time around.

In fact, the Baggies have lost just one game since March, that being on the final day of last season away to Sheffield Wednesday, as the Scottish head coach will be keen to continue this excellent trajectory,

The likes of Jimmy-Jay Morgan, Barney Stewart, Nolan Galves, Conor Townsend, Felix Horn Myhre, Matt Ingram, and Rabby Nzingoula have penned deals in the Black Country this summer, and with less than a week to go until the window slams shut, there remains time for some more work to be completed in the market, as one player has been on the lips of Baggies fans more than most over the past few months.

Football League World's West Brom fan pundit, Callum Burgess, has shared their thoughts on who they would love to see join the club before the end of the window, and has name-dropped someone who has persistently been linked with the club throughout the summer.

Callum said: "The overriding feeling in the fanbase is that the majority would love it if a move for Cameron Archer was able to materialise. However, I think that's probably reached the stage of being quite unlikely now.

"If Albion were able to get a deal done for him, it'd be a different profile of striker that Albion have at the moment, when comparing him to Jimmy-Jay Morgan, Heggebo, and Barney Stewart.

"The difference between Archer and them is that he's probably more likely to make runs in behind and perhaps be more of a poacher, in the sense he'd be able to get on the end of a chance to be able to drift out wide, a bit like Jimmy-Jay Morgan does this towards the left; he'd be able to do something similar towards the right.

Archer, 24, has had a difficult time at St Mary's across the past couple of years, having joined the Hampshire-based outfit in the summer of 2024 from Aston Villa for around £15 million.

The former Aston Villa striker suffered relegation to the second tier in his first year for the Saints, and under both Will Still and Tonda Eckert, could only manage just under 900 league minutes last campaign across 30 Championship appearances, scoring four and assisting three.

According to Alan Nixon via Patreon, Preston North End are keen on taking the forward back on loan this summer, with the striker having previously enjoyed a spell at Deepdale during the second half of the 2021/22 season, before having an even better spell on loan with Middlesbrough the following year.

West Brom's name has been linked with Archer throughout the summer, as according to Darren Witcoop via X, Wrexham is another club that is an admirer of the Jamaican.

A move to Rangers last January fell through, and following Southampton's capture of Lewis Dobbin for around £9 million and subsequent addition of Divin Mubama on loan, an exit appears increasingly likely.

It would be a surprise to nobody to see West Brom still in the running for his signature this late in the window, though whether they can come to terms on a deal with Southampton remains to be seen.

With less than a week to go until the window slams shut until January, West Brom, just like the majority of other Championship clubs, will be keen to end the summer on a high.

Southampton look increasingly likely to be willing to part ways with Archer on a loan deal before the end of the window, which would suit West Brom down to the ground.

Whilst he has struggled during his time on the South Coast, Archer, on more than one occasion, has proven to be an excellent goalscorer in the Championship, and could still play a crucial role for a side like West Brom.
